The California optometric board has initiated an advocacy campaign on in-person eye exams that may be  a precursor to state lawmakers adopting legislation that would restrict or ban access to online vision testing services in California. This type of legislation has been introduced in states across the country and seeks to create an artificial government-protected marketplace that requires consumers to go into an optometrist office for a vision check to renew a prescription every year. It would raise costs for patients, decrease access to care and remove a convenient, safe and effective eye health tool from the California marketplace.
